Harrison, NJ — I met jewelry designer Erica Lasan last year. A mutual friend invited me to her trunk show at DL on the Lower East Side. Not only was her QuÉrica collection beautiful, so was her spirit! Part of what makes her designs so magical is her vibrant and positive energy. Her brand and life philosophy is “Live Rich!” She’s not talking dinero — she means wealth from within. Learn more about her below.
ME: Who is Erica Lasan?
ERICA LASAN: A 27 year old ‘satoriophile,’ jewelry designer, video host, cookie lover, sister, daughter, friend, and wife-to-be!
Where are you right now? At this very second, I’m sitting at a cafe called Vicente’s Bread Kitchen up the street from my apartment.
Do you like it there? I love it here! On the days when I’m not running out-and-about, this is the place where I get most of my work done. The staff at the café affectionately calls the corner where I sit, my “office.”
What does it smell like? It smells like coffee and Portuguese bread!
Enough with the serious questions! Who or what is your current muse? This may sound weird, and I hate to say it, but at the moment I’m currently feeling like my own muse! Recently, I’ve gone through a transformational process in my life which has me completely open creatively and feeling like I can do anything and everything! Though juggling it all can be tough, I’m slowly learning to gain some balance. I’m so in love with life and all of its possibilities– and I want to explore them all, so that’s exactly what I’m doing. I’m even in the process of documenting it on my youtube channel and I’m calling it 90 Days of Momentum!
What is your total obsession? My total obsession is living rich! But in terms of tangible things, love! I LOVE love in all of its forms: my family, my friends, my fiancé… everyone! I’m obsessed with people and how each person we interact with on a daily basis enriches our lives– from the person pumping your gas, to the person serving you your morning coffee — they all make a difference! As far as material things, I would definitely have to say clothes — harem pants! I love them. I probably have like 25-30 pairs with different prints, colors, patterns, and textures. I know, overkill.
Favorite QuÉrica creation? My favorite QuÉrica creation is the “Cleopatra.” I feel like a queen whenever I wear it! It’s so bold and regal, but rustic and down-to-earth. It’s also an amazing piece because it transitions well– I can dress is up and wear it with a simple cocktail dress or dress it down and rock it with jeans and a t-shirt. Either way you wear it, the piece is sure to turn heads and start conversations.
Besides designing, what other ways do you express yourself? I love styling myself according to my mood for the day, but I guess that goes hand-in-hand with the designing.
I sing on occasion. At one point I wanted to make a career of it , along with songwriting. If you search YouTube hard enough, you may even come across a video of me performing one of my original compositions!
And when it comes to expressing oneself, there is no better way to express yourself than just plain speaking! One of my ultimate goals in life is to one day have my own talk show.
Favorite moment of 2014? Favorite moment of 2014 was when my now fiancé popped the question on our anniversary! (Editor’s note: Congratulations!)
What my work means to me is…Freedom, and recognizing that anything and everything that you do is a contribution to the world around you. That is why my brand’s tagline (and my life motto) is “Live Rich”– do what makes you happy and you’ll never have to “work.” Life is too short and too sweet. When you’re in integrity with yourself the world is a better place for everyone, because you are living in contribution and not forcing yourself into a role that you’re not meant to play. Your “work” should be your legacy!
What’s happening? So much is happening to mention it all! [For] the past 33 days I’ve challenged myself to 90 Days of Momentum — 90 days of living in the world of possibilities and working at my highest potential to create outstanding results. You can check out some of the main goals highlighted in the Day 1 Video. [Goals include] a 20k increase in jewelry sales; with this 15% of everything sold will go towards the cause of raising $3000 for kids and the arts in under-developed Afro-Latino countries. I plan on releasing a documentary sometime next year!
